I am an Italian Master Degree student in International Relations in Bologna and I am working on the project for my final dissertation next March 2015. My starting point is the analysis of humanitarian aid to North Korea after the famine of the Nineties but I want to deep the peace and trust building contribution of South Korean NGOs from 1998 to 2008-10 and the unconditional engagement of DPRK approach.
I asked many NGOs to help me, my wish was to come to South Korea and collect qualitative and quantitative datas: the Korean Sharing Movement was the only organization that freely opened the door of its office and let me assist to its everyday work. I have been an intern for two months and although I had no Korean skills, I have always thought that I was in the right place for my research and for my personal growth.
I helped the team manager to find some foundations for sponsoring their peace education projects but mostly I did my own research, reading and planning interviews. The Movement is one of the biggest South Korean organizations, they organize every year an international conference on humanitarian aid to DPRK and they provide me all the proceedings of the past conferences: I have been able to build a complete background of the theme and to add very good and up to date material to my references. I would not be able to organize my meetings with aid workers from other South Korean NGOs without their help because they introduced me in their wide network.
I loved to be involved in their projects, they made me feel part of the team. One of the best experience surely was to participate to the Football for Peace project, playing football games with elementary school children and seeing them learning very important values. It has been very educational also to attend the fundraising event because I could see many members rewarding all the work of the staff. During my stay I realized that topic I have chosen is not easy, I got very conflicting points of view but the staff always answered to my questions and doubts in a very constructive way allowing me to shape my own opinion and to improve my research capabilities.
I enjoyed every moment I spent at the Korean Sharing Movement, they are very good people and I really appreciate their values and work.
Thank you for welcoming me with open arms. Hope to meet you again!
