The Korean Sharing Movement has published an English booklet titled “The Road to Peace Through sharing – Human stories from inter-Korean exchange” to share with the international community some of the episodes and projects KSM has experienced over the past 20 years. We believe that this documenting of the past, consisting of 15 stories and over 80 pages, is the first time in KSM history, that such varied material has been compiled and published in English.

After its foundation, the Korean Sharing Movement visited the North dozens of times every year, focusing on assistance and development cooperation projects up until 2010. Since then however, it has become increasingly difficult to visit North Korea for a multitude of reasons. Whilst reflecting on our experiences of cooperation with the north, our interest in peace and international cooperation have grown a great deal. This is because to overcome the problems of the South and the North, of the Korean Peninsula, peace must become the priority, and various actors from around the world must come together in the process of dealing with issues obstructing peacebuilding progress. We hope that this booklet can play a small part in facilitating this process and helping people to understand the underlying significance of South and North Koreans, separated by war, ideology and 75 years of divided history, engaging in humanitarian cooperation together.

People are at the heart of engagement. In weaving these stories together, the human factor of engagement has become a constant theme. Our assistance and cooperation projects are all dependent upon relationship-building and working together. The developing of relationships and the space in which that takes place creates a new platform for engagement. Indeed, whether discussing development or security issues, the human element should not be omitted from the debate. Rather, it should be at the center of the process- especially in the context of inter-Korean relations.  Furthermore, although this booklet is entitled “The Road to Peace through Sharing”, we strive to remember that, as Gandhi stated, “There is no road to peace. Peace is the road”.

“평화로 가는 길은 없다. 평화가 길이다.”

We hope this collection will be one of continuous attempts to engage with the international community moving forward into the future. A pdf of “The Road to Peace Through sharing – Human stories from inter-Korean exchange” can be downloaded from this link to the date page 자료실 on our website.
