Over the past 25 years, many South Korean NGOs have endeavored to provide humanitarian assistance to North Korea and engage in cooperative projects through inter-Korean exchange. Inter-Korean exchange and cooperation involves not only the South and the North, but rather in a context of broad ranging international and bilateral sanctions against North Korea and amidst a global pandemic, cooperation with the international community is more important than ever. Nevertheless, the majority of humanitarian activities carried out by South Korean civil society organizations regarding North Korea remains unknown to the international community.

Back in 2005, when the Korean Sharing Movement (KSM) was the chair organization of the Korea NGO Council for Cooperation with North Korea (KNCCK), a consultative council of South Korean NGOs engaged in projects with North Korea, a directory of all the member organizations was published in English to help the international community understand South Korean NGOs’ activities. Sixteen years later in 2021, we felt the need for a newly updated directory and have created just that with the support of the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the KNCCK.

Published in December 2021, the English directory of KNCCK members contains information on 42 organizations that participated in the booklet out of a total 62 member organizations. Through this directory, the Korean Sharing Movement hopes that the international community can greater understand the landscape of North Korea related organizations in South Korea, and that this will ultimately lead to enhanced cooperation between international and South Korean actors who are working towards what are often common goals. It is believed that the directory will be of use to not only humanitarian actors but also to researchers hoping to understand North Korean related organizations from South Korea.

The directory can be downloaded from the following data page (자료실) link, of the KSM website.
